The National Collection started with an original bequest of 93 works made to the National Museum in 1976, by the well-known cinema magnate and art patron, Dato Loke Wan Tho. Through careful nurturing over the years, this collection has grown significantly to approximately 8,000 pieces in 2010. The National Heritage Board is presently the custodian of this collection. With the Paris Magiciens show, global art made its entry into the art world. While world art remained synonymous with the art heritage of the “others,” global art by contrast crossed the boundaries and demanded acceptance as a contemporary practice on an equal footing with Western art.The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, launched in 1993 by the Queensland Gallery, Brisbane, was an ambitious attempt at remapping the former art world (see: this volume*, pp. 112–113). Sydneysiders have their first chance to walk into Jonathan Jones’ living “hanging gardens” atop the land bridge of the Eastern Distributor.
It’s more than a two-hectare garden; the work aims to give expression to the traditions of the world’s oldest living culture. Within its superstructure, the “living” artwork has been planted with local and regionally significant trees and native grasses – kangaroo grass, gadi/grass tree and banksia – that require fire to thrive and propagate. Consistent with Indigenous fire management practices, the planted grasses will be seeded and controlled by “cool” fires during the early dry season under the gallery’s activities program, which is integral to the artwork itself.Since work began in February 2023, the commission has been beset by tensions and delays over its design, costs, the use of cool cultural burns and its footprint. Gallery director Michael Brand has previously denied a fallout with Jones over the project.On Thursday, hoardings quietly came down on the sandstone public pathways of the “living” artwork which sits between the gallery’s old and new buildings – though its official opening will take place next year.Two years after the Art Gallery of NSW’s new $344 million building opened, the project’s final art commission, by acclaimed First Nations artist Jonathan Jones, is accessible to the public.

An art installation honouring seven "game changers" has been unveiled at Whitby Abbey as part of the National Lottery's 30th birthday celebrations. The Heritage Tree pays tribute to the "extraordinary impact" the seven have had on heritage and conservation, a National Lottery spokesperson said.The 5,400 sq m (58125 sq ft) artwork has been created using the abbey’s landscape and natural pigments painted on the ground to show the subjects' hands holding the roots of a tree. ... The National Lottery spokesperson said the "game changers" were nominated by members of the public and selected by a panel. They were chosen as examples of inspiring individuals who developed and delivered Lottery-funded projects to preserve heritage and enhance science and the environment.The artwork was unveiled by actor and broadcaster Sir Tony Robinson, who said he was "deeply honoured" to support the celebration of "these extraordinary people".
